Metronidazole is an antibiotic. It stops the bacteria, and some parasites, that cause an infection from growing. It comes in many forms: tablets, a liquid to drink, suppositories (put into the bottom), a skin gel or cream, and a vaginal gel. It can also be given by injection, usually in hospital.
- Infections of the mouth, gums and teeth, including dental abscesses
- Bacterial vaginosis, a common cause of unusual vaginal discharge
- Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by a tiny parasite
- Pelvic inflammatory disease and some other genital infections in women
- Skin infections, infected insect bites, wounds, leg ulcers and pressure sores
- Rosacea (as a skin gel or cream)
Get medical help straight away if
- Call an ambulance or go to the emergency department for a headache, high temperature and stiff neck together with sensitivity to bright light, hallucinations, confusion or trouble speaking. These are very rare signs of meningitis or a brain problem. Stop taking metronidazole and do not drive yourself.
- Call an ambulance for signs of a severe allergic reaction: sudden swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat, wheezing or struggling to breathe, a tight throat, blue, grey or pale lips or skin, sudden confusion, or fainting.
- Get urgent help for a fit (seizure).
- Stop and get medical help straight away for a widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin or mouth sores.

- Acute gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting): only for specific proven or strongly suspected infections (dysentery, cholera, giardiasis, amoebiasis, blood infection) or for high-risk patients
- Amoebiasis (amoebic dysentery): first choice for amoebiasis with symptoms, including dysentery and liver abscess
- Bacterial vaginosis: metronidazole tablets or vaginal gel are a first choice
- Giardiasis: The usual medicines for giardiasis. Tinidazole is often given as a short course and may work better and be easier to take than metronidazole. Metronidazole is cheap and widely used but can cause more stomach upset. Both can cause a metallic taste and a bad reaction with alcohol. Tinidazole should not be used in early pregnancy. Your doctor decides the medicine and the dose
- Helicobacter pylori infection: Metronidazole is part of bismuth quadruple therapy and some other combinations
- Peptic ulcer disease: Always given in combination with a PPI (never one antibiotic alone) to clear H. pylori
- Tetanus: kill the tetanus germs in the wound so that less toxin is made
